Northwest Territories Status of Protected Areas Network Report

Northwest Territories Status of Protected Areas Network Report

We designed a method for the Northwest Territories Status of Protected Areas Network (SOPAN) reporting and wrote the first report using this method.

Client Name

Government of the Northwest Territories

Services Provided

We reviewed all the existing SOPAN reports for each jurisdiction in Canada and several in other countries. We provided a comprehensive comparison using a set of criterion developed in cooperation with the client and provided a written outline detailing how the report could be written. We wrote the report, including all the required mapping and GIS analysis.

Client Challenge

The government of the Northwest Territories needed to produce a SOPAN report. This reporting contained some common information on each jurisdiction in Canada, but each reported in a very different format and with varying levels of detail. The government of the NWT was short-staffed and required someone to write the report.

How B&B Solved it?

We reviewed all of the various jurisdiction reports in Canada as well as some in the US and Australia and found the best reporting method would be similar to that of Quebec and Australia. We produced a comprehensive assessment justifying this decision based on the criteria submitted by the client. This included several drafts, which allowed the client to edit and guide the outcome and conclusions of the report. We wrote the SOPAN report during the following year, including all GIS mapping. This detailed report also provided the client with the information required to produce a short public summary version of the SOPAN report.
