  • Outcomes: Gain the knowledge and skills you need for bear guarding and staying safe in bear country.
  • Learn how to operate safely in bear country.
  • Understand bear deterrents and learn how to use them.
  • Find out how to guard your camp from bears.
Overview

The course has two segments: bear safety and bear guarding. The bear safety component includes an extensive overview of bear behaviour and biology, and reviews the management of attractants, safely working around bears, bear encounters, and the use of bear deterrents. Bear guarding trains you to work in an industrial or guiding setting where people will be working exclusively as bear guards. It covers positioning, common bear guarding problems, camp settings, the use of deterrents (bear spray, bear bangers, and 12-gauge deterrents). You must possess a Firearms Possession and Acquisition Certificate or complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, which we also offer.
